Top Ten Greatest Football Rivalries

   

Football is the most followed game on planet earth . It is played in almost every country. Have huge fan base and huge followers from around the globe. Few of the matches all round the world have become matter of pride and honor for teams and for their fans as well. Lets check those rivalries one by one 

 

#10 (The Avellaneda Derby) Clásico De Avellaneda

The Avellaneda derby is the second most important rivalry in Argentine football. It is contested between Club Atlético Independiente and Racing Club, the 3rd and 5th most successful teams in terms of the total number of league championships won.

 

 

#9 The Uruguayan Clásico

 

                The rivalry between Club Nacional de Football and Club Atlético Peñarol is regarded as one of the oldest derbies in football outside Great Britain. Both teams are based in the capital of Uruguay, Montevideo.

 

 

#8 Intercontinental Derby

Intercontinental Derby is the match between Fenerbahçe SK and Galatasaray SK. (The 2 biggest Turkish teams from the Asian and the European parts of Istanbul.) 

 

 

#7 Derby of the Capital City (Derby della Capitale)

The Rome derby is the match between A.S. Roma and SS Lazio in the capital of Italy. This is one of the greatest and hotly contested derbies in Europe.

 

 

#6 Derby of Millions (Clássico dos Milhões)

Classic Brazilian derby between Flamengo and Vasco da Gama, both from Rio de Janeiro. Derby of the Millions’ almost certainly involves more fans than any other derby in the world. It is said that these two sides have more fans than any other teams on the continent, hence the nickname: The Derby of the Millions. 

 

 

#5 Old Firm

Old firm is the name given to the Scottish derby between Celtic F.C. and Rangers F.C., both from Glasgow.  It is based on religion and politics. Celtic represents the Irish Catholic immigrants while Rangers represents the Protestant faction that opposes them. The first derby between these teams was in 1888, making it one of the oldest on the planet. 

 

 

#4 The Milan Derby (Derby della Madonnina)

The match between Ac Milan and FC.Internazionale. This is the only major crosstown derby where the game always take place at the same stadium. The first match between these two teams took place in 1908, where “The Rossoneri “ (Ac Milan) won 2-1. 

 

#3 Liverpool F.C. vs. Manchester United F.C.

The Liverpool F.C.–Manchester United F.C derby is without a doubt the biggest game in England. The clubs are the two most successful teams in England and is among the most supported teams in the world. Both clubs claim the title of 'the greatest English football club. Liverpool dominated English football from 1975 to 1990. Likewise, Manchester United have dominated English football since 1993. The games are usually very intense on and off the pitch. It is often played at lunchtime due to media interest and to discourage fans from drinking before the game. 

 

 

#2 El Clásico

El Clásico is the name given to any football match between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. The rivalry starts as about Barcelona and Madrid are the two biggest cities in Spain, the two football clubs are two of the richest, most successful and influential football clubs, not only in Spain, but all over the world.

 

#1 El Superclásico

Superclásico is the name of a football match in Argentina between Buenos Aires rivals Boca Juniors and River Plate. The Superclásico is particularly noted for the passion of the fans. According to statistics, they commandeer more than 70% of all Argentine football fans between them. In 2004, The Observer put the Superclásico at the top of their list of "50 sporting things you must do before you die", saying that "Derby day in Buenos Aires makes the Old Firm game look like a primary school kick-about."
